Take a tour of early 20th-century Italy in this showcase of long-unseen films—beautiful examples of Lumière-era cinema.
The pioneers of early cinema gave audiences around the world what was once unthinkable: moving-image records of faraway lands and the people who inhabited them. Over a century ago, following the footsteps of the Lumière brothers, hordes of camera operators traveled far and wide through Italy to capture the landscapes, villages, cities, events, factories, customs, and traditions with true technical know-how. Their films feature manually colored images, split-screen sequences, and beautifully executed fixed and moving camera shots.
For over two decades and with the help of archives throughout the world, Cineteca di Bologna collected and restored a wealth of materials related to these works. This presentation, curated by the Cineteca’s Andrea Meneghelli, offers an authentic, early 20th-century Grand Tour of the country—from Sicily to Milan via Naples, Bologna, and Venice—providing us with a vivid and stereotype-free depiction of Italian life in that era.
