Spotlight on Shary Flenniken

In conversation with Rachel Miller

Award-winning cartoonist, editor, author, and screenwriter Shary Flenniken visits as part of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus for an onstage conversation with scholar Dr. Rachel Miller, a managing editor at The Comics Journal.

Flenniken is best known as a contributor and editor at National Lampoon magazine. After attending commercial art school in Seattle, she migrated to the colorful world of underground comic books and newspapers that was burgeoning in 1970s San Francisco. Her work was discovered by editors from National Lampoon, and she was recruited to add her down-home view of suburban angst to the pages of that magazine. Her irreverent strip about precocious teenagers is now collected in Trots and Bonnie, published by the New York Review of Comics.

Her work has appeared in a variety of books, magazines, and films including American Bystander, Mad, Graphic Classics, Comics Confidential, and Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Writers and Artists Who Made the National Lampoon Insanely Great.

Joining Flenniken in conversation is Rachel Miller who earned her PhD from Ohio State. In addition to being a managing editor for The Comics Journal , she has written extensively on comics. Her book An Introduction to American Comics is forthcoming from Routledge.

This year’s CXC festival features both virtual and in-person events presented by Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, Columbus College of Art & Design, Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus Metropolitan Library, and the Wexner Center.
